Our first decaf offering is a long time coming! We tried dozens of decaf samples before finding an exceptional coffee from Colombia that doesn’t sacrifice flavor during the decaffeination process. We roasted this coffee in small samples before finding the perfect roast profile. Carrying notes of brown sugar and delicious cherry with a smooth milk chocolate finish, we’d be hard pressed to name this a decaf during a blind tasting! Great as espresso too!
Colombia has been using the new “sugarcane” decaffeination process for the past few years with great success. We are excited to get a hold of this small lot of wonderful decaf to share with our customers.

This Colombian sugarcane decaf coffee is a single origin offering from the Risaralda region which is in central Colombia.
Colombian Sugarcane Decaf
The Risaralda Valley is located in central Colombia and is known as a prime coffee growing region with an altitude of 1200-1900m. This particular coffee is washed and then undergoes the decaffienation process on-site using the innovative and natural “sugarcane” process. After processing, the coffee is dried and packaged before loading onto a cargo ship on the Pacific side of Colombia. It then arrived in California before making its way to our roastery.
“Sugarcane” Decaf Process
Colombia is the only country to currently utilize the newer sugarcane decaffeination process. The process begins by steaming the raw coffee beans after washing to make caffeine extraction easier. Molasses from local sugarcane is heated to form sugar alcohol which is then combined with vinegar (acetic acid) to create the natural decaffeinating agent. The beans are added to this bath and the wash slowly passes through a charcoal filter that removes the caffeine. After the process, decaffeinated coffee beans and raw caffeine are left over. The decaf coffee beans are washed, dried, and prepare for shipping. The raw caffeine is then sold for use in other industries such as soda, medicines, and supplements.
